7 POWERFUL TIPS ON HOW TO IMPROVE SELF ESTEEM
This is a short article about how to improve your self-esteem so you can have better relationships, become happier, and be more fulfilled.
Did you know that February is International Boost Self-Esteem Month? And it’s especially important this year, taking into account that we are in the midst of a pandemic, with a series of lockdowns which has resulted in people spending more time alone with themselves than usual.
It is a known fact that a large percentage of people do suffer from low self-esteem and lack self-confidence. Your self-esteem is how you think and feel about yourself. There will be times when your self-esteem is high and others when it is low. With higher self-esteem, you are more likely to feel positive about yourself, about life and better equipped to cope with life’s ups and downs. Lower self-esteem may result in you having more negative thoughts about yourself, more critical of yourself and less likely to stand up for yourself or bounce back from challenges or setbacks.
Some common examples of low self-esteem are feeling angry or frustrated about who you are, hating your body, feeling of worthlessness, feeling anxious and fearful, trying to be a people pleaser.
I would like to share 7 powerful tips and habits I have found for improving and maintaining my own self-esteem.
1. Listen to your self-talk. Consciously recognise, challenge and stop the negative self-talk. Boosting self-esteem means being kind to yourself – because if you don’t, who will? Avoid comparing yourself with others. Being yourself, and accepting yourself for all the good and bad points is an important part of having good self-esteem.
2. Practice self-care. The importance of having a self-care routine cannot be undermined. However busy you are, ensure that you set aside some “me time” to improve your wellbeing. Take care of yourself by maintaining a healthy balanced diet, being physically active and getting adequate sleep.
3.Gratitude. Commit to list everything you are grateful for every day. When you intentionally notice good in others, how people are good to you, your attitude also changes. This boosts your self-esteem. Attitude of gratitude can help change the way you judge others. Generally, people who are high on gratitude tend to not compare themselves with others.
4. Focus on your accomplishments. Celebrate your successes. It could be a new qualification, a promotion at work or you have nailed that recipe you have been wanting to try. You deserve to enjoy it for the hard work you have put in. Savour the moment, these are all the positive emotions you created.
5. Spend time with positive people. Connect with people whom you identify and trust. Spend quality time with family and friends. Positivity and happiness is contagious Surround yourself with positive people. You will find that while being in the company of happy, positive and motivated people, the emotions will rub of on you too.
6. Stimulate yourself mentally. Our minds need attention. As much as we need to relax our mind, it is equally important to stimulate our minds and give us some new things to think about. Trying something new can help you develop a skill and meet new people Try reading some uplifting books, listening to some fun music you enjoy, focus on being creative and happy, do things that you enjoy.
7. Get outside your comfort zone. Stepping outside your comfort zone can be an effective way to boost both your self-esteem and self-confidence. You are in fact proving to yourself that you have positive traits when you step of your confirm zone to do things, big or small.
